- Verbena hastata is a member of the vervain family with small, blueish-purple flowers that bloom in summer. Found across North America, blue vervain has been utilized for its healthful properties for centuries by Native Americans and later by folk herbalists. The herb was traditionally steeped as blue vervain tea but can also be tinctured, made into a syrup, or incorporated into bath and body products like foot soaks and creams.
- Several of the names for vervain refer to the legend that the wounds of Jesus were dressed with vervain when he was taken down from the cross. This is disputed among biblical scholars as it is not referenced anywhere in modern bibles. It was also used as an ingredient in pagan love potions.
- HOW TO USE BLUE VERVAIN Blue vervain can be taken in a variety of forms. The dried flowers are commonly taken in the form of a tea or infusion. It is also available in tincture form which is used for depression and as a digestive or liver tonic. You can use the plant to make a poultice that you can apply to soothe minor wounds, bites and cuts, you can also use the infusion as a mouthwash.
- To make vervain tea, bring a saucepan of water to boil. Add 2 teaspoons to the tea infuser. Pour over the boiling water and allow the tea to steep for 5 minutes. Remove the tea infuser and add honey, lemon or stevia to enhance the flavor.
- The name Verbena means “altar plant,” and it was used as an altar herb by the Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks. Known as a holy herb it was burned in Roman temples and scattered on altars, while their soldiers carried sprigs of vervain as protection.
- Magical Properties: PURIFICATION: Vervain is often burned as an offering or infused into water and sprinkled on the altar for purification or exorcising rituals.
